This oil on canvas painting depicts an atmospheric nocturnal river landscape, executed in the Romantic style. The composition is centred on a large windmill situated on a dark riverbank, silhouetted against a cloudy night sky. A full moon is positioned low near the horizon, casting a bright, vertical reflection across the undulating surface of the water. To the lower right, a small rowing boat with figures is visible on the river. The painting employs a palette of deep blues, greens, and greys, with impasto highlights used for the moon and its reflection to create a luminous effect. The work is unsigned and is highly characteristic of the nocturnes produced by the Pether family of artists in the 19th century. The painting is housed in a substantial and highly ornate gilt composition frame in the Rococo taste, featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, shell motifs at the corners, and intricate C-scrolls.
Condition report:
The painting is in generally good condition for its age. There is a fine, stable craquelure visible across the canvas surface. The varnish has darkened slightly, and there is a light accumulation of surface dirt. The frame remains structurally sound but shows minor losses to the gilt composition ornaments, particularly along the outer edges and corner motifs, with some visible cracking to the gesso.
