This pair of framed chromolithograph prints were originally produced as supplements for Pears’ Annual, a popular late 19th-century publication by the soap manufacturer. The prints depict a humorous narrative titled OH MY!, OR ‘DOWN IN THE DUMPS’ and IT’S GRAND!, OR ‘UP IN THE CLOUDS’. The subject matter follows a young boy’s experience attempting to smoke a cigar, showing his progression from distress to confidence. Each print features the distinctive red cursive Pears logo in the lower corner of the image. The works are presented in matching gilt-effect moulded frames with double sage-green mounts. The titles are printed centrally in black ink on the mounts below the images. No artist signatures or edition numbers are visible.
Condition report:
Both prints exhibit general age-related toning across the paper and mounts, consistent with their period. The colours remain relatively well-preserved with no significant fading. There are no obvious signs of foxing, moisture damage, or tearing. The frames show light wear, minor surface scuffs, and small areas of loss to the gilt finish, particularly at the corners and edges.
