A vintage J. Jaques and Son Ltd In Statu Quo portable folding chess set manufactured in London. The set comprises a mahogany folding board and a set of carved pieces in natural white and dyed red. The board is designed with a pegged-hole system, allowing pieces to remain in place when the board is closed. An internal locking mechanism is operated by buttons on the side of the frame. A small brass plaque on the frame is engraved J. JAQUES and SON Makers LONDON and the wooden frame is stamped IN STATU QUO PATENT CHESS BOARD. The set is contained within its original black textured carrying case, featuring a brass latch and a gold-stamped oval logo on the flap inscribed THE IN STATU QUO CHESS BOARD JAQUES and SON LTD PATENTEES LONDON. The case interior contains a sliding indicator marked TO PLAY with red and white colour indicators.
Condition report:
The set exhibits age-related wear throughout. The carrying case shows scuffing, fraying to the edges, and loss of material along the spine and surfaces. The mahogany board and pieces show minor surface scratches and general signs of use. One red pawn appears to be missing from the starting position on the board.
