The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £3

Buyer's Premium:

This collection comprises an assortment of glazed earthenware character jugs and Toby jugs, characteristic of mid-20th-century British pottery production. The lot features a variety of forms, including full-figure seated Toby jugs, bust-style character jugs in multiple sizes, and a novelty teapot. Key figures represented include John Bull, identified by his Union Jack waistcoat and black top hat, and a monarch figure with a golden crown in the style of Henry VIII. The group also includes several naval and military figures in traditional tricorn and bicorn hats, alongside figures in nightcaps, bonnets, and historical costume. One distinctive item is a novelty teapot modelled as a town crier. Also present is a large vessel with a textured ochre-coloured body featuring a basketweave or beehive pattern with peripheral figures. The items are decorated with hand-painted overglaze and underglaze pigments in a vibrant palette. While no maker’s marks are visible on the bases in the provided images, the collection is in the style of noted Staffordshire potteries such as Burlington, Shorter and Son, or Royal Doulton.

Condition report:

The items generally appear to be in good condition with well-preserved glaze and vibrant colours. Typical of vintage earthenware, some pieces may exhibit fine surface crazing or minor nibbles and chips, particularly to the vulnerable edges of hats, handles, and rims. No significant structural cracks or professional repairs are visible from the overview images.
