A collection of vintage lithographed tinplate containers of varied forms and themes, primarily of British interest. The group includes several Harrods promotional tins, comprising an octagonal Mint Humbugs tin featuring a colour illustration of the London storefront, a round blue and white chequered Shortbread tin, and a rectangular Crisp Butter Biscuits tin. Brand advertising is represented by a large cylindrical Quaker Oats tin in red and blue, a blue Tetley tea tin with gold lettering, a white Gouda Biscuits tin decorated with blue Delft-style windmill scenes, and a black and gold Fortnum & Mason English Orange Pekoe tea tin. Commemorative and artistic tins include a rectangular container featuring a portrait of Winston Churchill within a lithographed ornate gold-effect frame, a tin with a portrait of a Victorian military figure set against a Union Jack, and a Vincent van Gogh tin featuring a reproduction of a self-portrait. Novelty and decorative items include a figural blue open-top racing car numbered 84 with a driver in the cockpit, an oval tin depicting three geese in a winter landscape, a cylindrical tin with stylized bird illustrations, and a small triangular cream and gold-tone tin.
Condition report:
The collection is in varied vintage condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. Visible signs of use include surface scratches, small dents, and oxidation to the exposed metal edges, bases, and interiors. Some fading of the lithographed colours is evident on certain pieces. The Winston Churchill tin shows light surface scuffing across the central portrait, and the racing car tin exhibits minor paint loss to the wheels and edges.
