This assortment comprises several vintage hand-carved wooden elephant figurines of varying sizes and styles. The collection includes naturalistic carvings with detailed, textured hides, alongside more stylized, smooth-finished modernist forms. Groupings of mother and calf elephants are present, and one piece is a relief carving mounted on a rectangular wooden plinth. The figures are crafted from various hardwoods, exhibiting a variety of grain patterns and colours ranging from warm reddish-browns to deep, dark finishes. Several pieces include inlaid tusks, likely fashioned from bovine bone or a synthetic material. No maker’s marks, factory stamps, or signatures are visible. These carvings are typical of mid-to-late 20th-century artisanal production, frequently exported from regions such as East Africa or South Asia.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good vintage condition, exhibiting minor surface wear, scuffs, and dust consistent with age and display. The most detailed larger elephant has one tusk that appears slightly misaligned or loose. There are minor chips and small losses to thin extremities, such as the edges of ears, across various pieces in the lot. One carving shows a small loss to the wood on its upper back.
