Buyer's Premium:

This group of decorative artisan handicrafts consists of several elephant figurines in various sizes and regional Indian folk art styles, dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. The collection includes notable examples of Kashmiri papier-mache, identified by the intricate kar-i-kalamdani style of fine floral painting on lacquered surfaces in shades of emerald green, crimson, and cobalt blue. Other pieces are fashioned from carved wood and hand-painted with traditional Rajasthani motifs, including floral vines and geometric patterns. One larger specimen is depicted with an ornate howdah or ceremonial saddle, mounted upon a tiered wooden plinth. Further examples include a figure embellished with shisha mirror-work and metallic chain harnesses, and a ceramic or composite vessel in the form of an elephant with a rider. The models vary from standing naturalistic forms to stylised animal figures, all featuring traditional Indian caparisons and decorative finishes.

Condition report:

The items are in a varied state of preservation consistent with age and previous display. Visible defects include minor paint loss and surface abrasions, particularly on the edges and protruding features of the papier-mache and wooden models. Some examples show evidence of dust accumulation and shelf wear. A few figurines appear to be missing tusks or have loose decorative threads and sequins.
