A Victorian provincial spindle-back childrens side chair of mixed hardwood construction. The backrest is composed of a curved top rail supported by six slender spindles. The solid wooden seat is shaped and retains remnants of a stenciled decorative motif in a light-coloured pigment, featuring a central scrollwork design and a bordering line. The chair is raised on four ring-turned legs, which are joined by a central H-stretcher. The wood has a dark-stained finish. No further manufacturer marks or stamps are visible.
Condition report:
The chair is in a heavily used, as-found condition. There is significant wear to the dark-stained finish throughout, most notably on the top rail and seat where the underlying timber is exposed. A structural split is visible on the right side of the wooden seat. The painted decoration on the seat is partially worn away. General scuffing, scratches, and signs of age-related wear are present on the legs and stretchers.
