This lot comprises a diverse collection of hand-carved wooden figures and decorative items, largely characteristic of the mid-to-late 20th-century souvenir and export trade from regions such as Kenya. The group features an Asante-style Akua’ba fertility figure with a flat, disc-form head, alongside several figures with elongated necks adorned with coiled metal wire rings. A standing warrior figure is included, wearing a fabric loincloth and carrying a teardrop-shaped hide shield with red pigment markings and a small leather quiver with miniature arrows. The collection also contains a polychrome relief-carved plaque depicting a seated figure in profile with a stylized blue serpent or feathered headdress, reminiscent of Maya or Aztec iconography. Additional items include abstract openwork carvings, multiple figural letter openers or knives with carved handles, and a set of wooden serving utensils. The items are crafted from various hardwoods with dark-stained and polished finishes.
Condition report:
The items are in generally good vintage condition. There is a noticeable accumulation of dust in the recessed areas of the carvings. Minor surface scuffs, handling wear, and light pigment loss to the painted plaque are present, consistent with age and use as decorative objects.
