A late 19th-century dome-top steamer trunk of stave construction. The trunk is formed from horizontal wooden slats, likely pine, with a reddish-brown stained finish. It is reinforced by vertical and horizontal black-painted metal bands and iron rivets. The barrel-top lid was designed to prevent other luggage from being stacked on top during travel. The exterior is fitted with a central metal lock plate, two hasps, and decorative embossed metal corner brackets. The interior is largely unlined, exposing the natural wood construction and age-related drying cracks, though it retains remnants of an original decorative paper border in green, purple, and white. The original leather side handles are missing, leaving only the iron attachment loops. No manufacturer marks are visible.
Condition report:
Fair antique condition showing significant wear consistent with age and travel. The exterior wood slats have multiple scuffs, scratches, and areas of finish loss. Metal hardware shows surface oxidation and rust. The interior lining is mostly absent, and the wood displays stains and drying cracks. The leather handles have perished, and the original internal tray is missing.
