A framed and glazed colour reproduction of Christopher Saxton’s seminal 1579 map of England and Wales. The print features decorative elements characteristic of the period, including a large title cartouche to the upper left surmounted by the Royal Arms of Elizabeth I. The cartouche contains the Latin inscription ANGLIA hominu numero, rerumq fere omniu copijs abundans, sub mitissimo Elizabethae serenissmae et doctissimae Reginae imperio, placidissima pace annos iam viginti florentissima. An[n]o Dm 1579. The topography is depicted with stylized sugarloaf hills and river systems, with the surrounding seas featuring a compass rose, galleons, and sea monsters. The lower right margin is printed with the title SAXTON’S MAP OF ENGLAND AND WALES, 1579. The map is housed in a cream mount and a decorative black frame with a gilt inner edge. The reverse bears a purple ink framer’s stamp for R. W. LUCKHAM & SON (WILFRED W. LUCKHAM), 10 MARKET AVE. PLYMOUTH.
