An antique manual laundry mangle manufactured by H.J. & E.A. Boolds Ltd of Devonport. The machine features a cast iron frame finished in green paint with red accents on the embossed lettering. The arched top of the frame is inscribed with Devonport and H.J & E.A. Boolds Ltd. A circular manufacturer’s medallion is located on the side frame. The unit is equipped with two large wooden rollers operated via a manual hand-crank wheel with a wooden grip. The drive system utilises a geared mechanism. At the top of the frame is a four-lobed tension adjustment screw mounted on a leaf spring assembly. The entire apparatus is set upon four small cast iron wheels for mobility.
Condition report:
The item displays significant signs of age and domestic use. There is widespread paint loss and surface oxidation across the cast iron components. The wooden rollers show evidence of cracking, staining, and surface wear consistent with age.
