A Victorian mahogany chest of drawers dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. The chest features a traditional two over three configuration, consisting of two short drawers positioned above three long, graduated drawers. The drawer fronts and top surface are finished with figured mahogany veneers, and the carcase is constructed with the rounded front corners characteristic of the mid-Victorian period. Each drawer is fitted with its original turned wooden knobs and a centrally located, inset brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers feature flush-fitting fronts and, as is typical for the period, would likely contain hand-cut dovetail joints with secondary timber linings such as pine. The piece is supported on four turned bun feet.
Condition report:
The item is in fair condition for its age and displays a rich, dark patina. There is visible surface wear throughout, including scratches and scuff marks to the top surface. Minor chips and small losses to the mahogany veneer are present, particularly along the edges of the drawer fronts and the horizontal dividers. The hardware appears complete and original to the piece. The bun feet show typical wear and scuffing from contact with the floor.
