A set of antique counter-top balance scales accompanied by an assortment of weights. The set is constructed from cast iron with a dark finish. The apparatus includes a large, deep scoop-shaped pan and a smaller octagonal platform for the placement of weights. The collection includes various weights stored within a rectangular metal tin. A large circular cast iron weight is embossed with the markings W. & T. AVERY BIRMINGHAM 8 OZ. Another weight is marked 6 OZ, and a yellow-metal cylindrical weight with a handle is stamped 2 lb.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age and heavy use. There is significant surface oxidation and rusting across the cast iron frame and the scoop pan. The original black finish is worn and chipped in several areas. The weights show similar wear and oxidation. The mechanical components appear intact but have not been tested for precision.
