Estimated price: £10 - £20

Buyer's Premium:

A solid timber storage chest of rectangular form, constructed from a tropical hardwood displaying the characteristic watered grain pattern of camphor wood. The chest is built using through-dovetail joints at the corners, typical of utilitarian marine or military trunks from the late Victorian or Edwardian periods. The hinged lid opens to reveal a single, deep, unlined compartment. Hardware includes two brass butt hinges and a recessed brass lock plate on the front with a corresponding striker plate on the underside of the lid. No handles are fitted to the sides. The exterior features hand-painted red markings, including an X on the front and top surfaces.

Condition report:

The chest is in used, unrestored condition. The exterior surfaces show significant wear, including scratches, abrasions, and stains consistent with age and functional use. There are prominent red paint marks on the front and top. The lid does not sit perfectly flush when closed, suggesting minor warping or hinge misalignment. The interior timber shows age-related darkening and minor marks but remains structurally sound.
