A collection of historical items and books. The lot includes three small-format volumes: two copies of the Holy Bible and one volume of Common Prayer and Hymns A & M. The books are bound in dark leather or cloth with gilt titles to the spines. Also included is a fragile fragment of The British Gazette, dated Thursday, May 13, 1926. This newspaper was published by His Majesty’s Stationery Office during the 1926 United Kingdom General Strike. The fragment includes headlines such as THE KING TO THE NATION and Appeal For Lasting Peace. The collection further contains a small framed black and white caricature illustration depicting a soldier in a peaked cap standing over a fallen beast. Completing the lot is a vintage Morse code telegraph key consisting of a brass mechanism with a large black circular knob, mounted on a rectangular polished wooden base. The base features four brass binding posts for electrical connections and two mounting holes.
Condition report:
The books show significant age-related wear, including scuffing, losses to the spine ends, and worn corners. The British Gazette fragment is heavily toned, brittle, and exhibits significant chipping and tears to the edges with some loss of text. The framed illustration shows toning to the paper consistent with age. The telegraph key exhibits a natural patina to the brass components and some wear to the wooden base.
