This lot comprises two items of naval and maritime interest. The first is a framed etched copper-toned commemorative plaque depicting a British nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) at sea. The plaque is inscribed to the lower left Chatham Refit Group and is signed by the artist Nigel Vallis to the lower right. The upper right portion features the official crests of six notable Royal Navy nuclear submarines: Conqueror, Courageous, Churchill, Dreadnought, Valiant, and Warspite. These six vessels comprise the entirety of the Valiant and Churchill classes, along with the pioneering HMS Dreadnought, all of which were maintained and refitted at the Chatham Dockyard before its closure in 1984. The plaque is presented in a polished wooden frame. The reverse features a retailer label for Maritime Scene, Gosport, Hampshire.
The second item is a mid-20th-century wall-mounted aneroid barometer by Metamec of Dereham. The circular silvered dial features a dual scale for barometric pressure: the outer scale in inches (26 to 31) and an inner scale in millibars (880 to 1060). The dial is decorated with traditional weather indicators including Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair, and Very Dry. The dial is inscribed with forecasting instructions at the bottom and is marked Metamec Dereham and Made in England. It carries patent numbers Brit Pat Nos 530005 and USA Pat Nos 2529909. The instrument is mounted on a shaped hardwood backboard. The reverse features a metal casing with adjustment screws inscribed To Adjust Above Sea Level Maximum Half Turn.
Condition report:
Both items are in good vintage condition. The commemorative plaque shows minor surface dust and the wooden frame has light age-related wear. The backing paper is partially torn but the Gosport retailer label remains intact. The barometer mount has minor surface scuffs and scratches consistent with age. The dial and glass are clear. Please note the mechanical functionality of the barometer is not guaranteed and it may require recalibration.
