This expressionistic glazed terracotta sculpture by the Italian artist Dino Bencini depicts a pianist with long, textured hair leaning intensely over a grand piano. The work is hand-modelled in a caricature style, featuring elongated features and a dynamic pose. It is finished in a creamy white glaze with dark brown umber staining applied to accentuate the details of the hair, hands, and the form of the piano. The piece is set upon an integral five-sided base, which is incised on the side with the signature Benci and the numbers 175-78. The underside of the base reveals an unglazed red terracotta body.
Approximately 16cm x 14cm x 11cm.
Condition report:
The sculpture is in good original condition with no apparent chips, cracks, or restorations. There is fine surface crazing throughout the glaze, which is characteristic of this type of studio ceramic. Minor surface grime is present consistent with age.
