A ceramic garden stool or plant stand modelled as a caparisoned elephant, decorated with polychrome glazes in a palette of cream, blue, ochre-brown, and green. The piece features raised relief-moulded details throughout. The elephant is depicted in a standing pose with a ceremonial harness and a rectangular platform on its back. The platform features a central circular medallion containing a stylised Shou character, a traditional symbol for longevity, surrounded by scrolling foliage and bat-wing motifs. Similar stylised characters are found within the blue scrolling patterns on the saddle cloths. The form and decorative scheme are characteristic of late 20th-century ceramic production for the international export market. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces of the piece.
