A large rectangular storage chest, commonly known as a camphor wood chest, constructed from tropical hardwood, likely Cinnamomum camphora. This item is characteristic of mid-20th century Chinese export furniture, typically sourced from Hong Kong or Shanghai between 1930 and 1960. The chest is decorated with profuse high-relief carvings on the lid, front, and side panels, depicting traditional Chinese maritime scenes with junks, figures, and architectural elements. The top features a recessed rectangular panel with a central uncarved semi-circle, surrounded by deep narrative carvings and framed by a continuous floral scroll border. The chest is fitted with a traditional circular brass butterfly medallion lock and original toggle pin. The use of camphor wood was historically favoured for its aromatic properties which act as a natural insect repellent.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair to good structural condition. There are visible surface scuffs and several white marks, possibly paint or plaster transfer, on the lid and front panels. There is an accumulation of dust and minor debris within the recessed areas of the deep carvings. The brass hardware shows a natural aged patina.
