This lot comprises two antique open-face pocket watches. The first is an English lever pocket watch by H. Samuel, Manchester, featuring a manual key-wind and key-set movement engraved with the maker name and WARRANTED ENGLISH LEVER, bearing serial number 420877. The white enamel dial presents Roman numeral hour markers and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position, signed H. SAMUEL MANCHESTER. The sterling silver case is finished with engine-turned decoration to the reverse surrounding a vacant central shield cartouche. Internal hallmarks include a lion passant and case maker mark W.E.S. The second watch is a Swiss-made Sphinx Lever pocket watch retailed by Symons & Son, Launceston. The manual wind, pin-set lever movement is stamped SWISS MADE with a Sphinx trademark and patent numbers BREVETS 82806, 82809, 82810, and 82811. The cream-coloured dial is signed SYMONS & SON LAUNCESTON and SPHINX LEVER, with Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial. The base metal case houses an original watchmaker’s paper from Symons & Son, Watch and Clock Makers, Launceston.
Case diameters: 50mm and 52mm.
Condition report:
Both watches are offered as-is for parts or restoration. The H. Samuel watch dial displays fine hairlines, and the silver case shows significant tarnishing and expected surface wear consistent with age. The Symons & Son watch dial has heavy patination, yellowing, and spotting. The base metal case exhibits surface scratches and loss to the plating. Both movements appear complete but have not been tested for mechanical functionality or timekeeping accuracy.
