A collection of various vintage and antique smalls and vanity items. The group includes a large circular black lacquer storage box, the lid featuring mother-of-pearl inlay depicting a rickshaw scene with two figures and a mountain landscape, and a smaller circular black box with painted floral decoration. The collection features three knives with mother-of-pearl handles, one being a sterling silver folding fruit knife with Sheffield hallmarks including a crown, lion passant, a gothic letter x for circa 1890, and the maker’s mark WN for William Needham. Also present is a circular brass-framed magnifying glass marked DÉPOSÉ, a gold-toned locket with engraved floral motifs, and an embroidered naval-style anchor badge. The assortment further contains several enamel and metal pins, notably National Union of General and Municipal Workers badges featuring the text N U G M W and UNITY IS STRENGTH, a STEWARD pendant, and Smith’s Double Twister pins. Additional items include a vintage matchbox with a pine marten illustration containing a white metal cross and earrings, and various cast metal charms.
Condition report:
The lacquer boxes exhibit significant surface wear, including crazing, cracking, and some losses to the finish and inlay. The mother-of-pearl handled knives show scratches and tarnishing to the blades consistent with age and use. The magnifying glass frame and other metal components show varying degrees of oxidation and surface tarnishing. Enamel badges appear generally well-preserved with minor surface scratches. The embroidered badge shows some fraying to the edges. Matchbox shows shelf wear and age-related discolouration.
