This lot comprises a collection of O gauge tinplate model railway items manufactured by Meccano Ltd. under the Hornby Series brand. The centrepiece is a clockwork 4-6-0 steam locomotive in Great Western Railway lined green livery. The locomotive is a Castle Class model, bearing the number 4073 on the cab side and a nameplate for Caerphilly Castle on the boiler. The internal clockwork mechanism is visible from the underside. Rolling stock within the collection includes a grey tinplate GW goods van and a brown tinplate LMS open wagon with gold-shadowed lettering, alongside several partial chassis in blue, green, and black. Lineside accessories feature lithographed tinplate station platforms and a waiting room with a green canopy, displaying printed advertisements for Scarborough and Meccanoland. The set also includes a large tinplate base with a metal crank handle and a substantial quantity of three-rail tinplate track in both curved and straight sections. A plain cardboard box contains additional components including station fencing and level crossing gates. Several pieces bear the printed label HORNBY SERIES MANFD. BY MECCANO LTD. L’POOL.
Condition report:
The collection is in a well-used vintage condition with significant evidence of age-related wear. There is extensive paint loss, scratching, and surface corrosion (rust) across the locomotive body, the roofs of the rolling stock, and the track sections. Some tinplate elements exhibit minor denting and bending. The clockwork mechanism of the locomotive has not been tested for functionality and the required winding key is missing. The set is incomplete, notably lacking the tender for the Caerphilly Castle locomotive. No original manufacturer packaging or third-party grading is present.
