An English porcelain coffee service in the Checkmate pattern, produced by the Empire Porcelain Company in Staffordshire, England. The collection comprises a tall coffee pot with a cover, a cream jug, an open sugar bowl, and several cups and saucers. The design is a graphic mid-century modern motif consisting of rows of alternating orange and grey triangles on a white porcelain ground. The saucers and the coffee pot lid feature a contrasting solid matte brown glaze. The vessels are designed with tapered profiles and high-set handles typical of the 1960s era. The base of the coffee pot displays the manufacturer mark in blue and black, featuring a stylized e above EMPIRE PORCELAIN COMPANY Staffordshire England. The pattern name CHECKMATE and registration number 900861 are also present, alongside an L-63 date code suggesting a production year of 1963. The pattern is applied using lithograph transfer techniques.
Condition report:
