A collection of vintage books, pamphlets, and ephemera primarily related to the Scout and Guide movements in the United Kingdom and internationally. The collection features a hardcover volume titled Playing the Game: A Baden-Powell Compendium, edited by Mario Sica, published by The Boy Scouts Association, retaining its original dust jacket. Significant softcover publications include titles from The Scouter’s Books series, such as No. 1: 100 Ideas for Troop Meetings and No. 3: the man and the boy, as well as The Patrol Books No. 19: OUR FOUNDER. Other notable works include Wolf Cubs by Gilcraft, published by C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, Girl Guiding by Lord Baden-Powell, Hints on Girl Guide Badges, An A.B.C. of Guiding by A.M. Maynard, Sea Pie by Gilcraft, and The Road Ahead published by The Boy Scouts Association, London. Regional and international interest is represented by the Norfolk Boy Scouts Song Book, two issues of The Drum for the Girl Guides Association of Papua New Guinea, and Chansons de Notre Chalet (2nd edition). The lot also contains a vintage black-and-white group photograph of a Scout troop and an embroidered Trefoil Guild South West England Trefoil Train Trek 2018 patch. The publications are predominantly octavo or smaller, bound in publisher’s cloth, pictorial boards, or paper wrappers.
Condition report:
The collection exhibits a varied state of preservation consistent with age and active use. Most items show typical signs of wear including tanning to pages, foxing, and creasing to the paper wrappers. The dust jacket for Playing the Game shows light shelf wear and minor soiling. Several of the softcover pamphlets, most notably Test Yourself Quizzes by Colin Leveridge and Sea Pie, show significant wear with tearing and loss to the covers and spines. The vintage photograph shows minor toning but remains clear.
