Lot 267: An English Oak Three-Tier Barley Twist Folding Cake Stand

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £5

Buyer's Premium:

An early 20th-century oak three-tier folding cake stand, traditionally referred to as a curate’s delight, designed in the Jacobean Revival style. The piece features three circular tiers, each decorated with concentric incised grooves to the top surface. The tiers are mounted between two barley twist (solomonic) uprights which terminate in a shaped, flat-topped carry handle. The stand is supported by splayed tripod-style feet and incorporates a brass or plated metal folding mechanism, enabling the tiers to pivot for storage. The stand is constructed from solid oak with a dark-stained finish. No maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible.

Condition report:

The stand appears structurally sound. There is a visible accumulation of surface dust and cobwebs throughout. The dark-stained finish shows signs of age-related wear, including minor scuffs, light scratches, and small indentations, particularly to the edges of the circular tiers and the feet. The folding mechanism is functional.
