A mid-20th-century Chinese export chest constructed from camphor wood. The exterior is finished with a dark stain and features extensive high relief carving on the lid, front, and corner pilasters. The central reserves on the lid and front are designed as smooth semi-circles, surrounded by detailed scenes of traditional Chinese junks at sea, pagodas, and figures within a landscape. Repeating floral and scrolling borders frame the decorative panels. The corner posts are integrated into the structure and feature carved mythical dragons. The sides are fitted with recessed, decoratively carved handles. The chest is equipped with traditional brass hardware, including a circular latch plate with a pin. The interior is of plain, light-coloured camphor wood and contains a small sliding internal box frame.
Condition report:
The chest shows signs of age and regular use. Visible surface scratches and scuffing are present, particularly on the smooth semi-circular reserves of the lid and front panel. There is wear to the stained finish along the edges and corners. Dust and debris have accumulated within the deep recesses of the carvings. The brass latch exhibits a natural patina. The item appears structurally sound.
