This lot comprises two mid-20th-century portable electric record players of British manufacture. The first unit is a Dansette Popular model, housed in a wooden case finished in blue rexine with a textured grey and white fabric front panel. It features two front-mounted rotary control knobs and a side-mounted carrying handle. The interior deck includes a speed selector for 33, 45, and 78 RPM records. Markings include a Dansette script badge on the front panel and a gold oval label inside the lid reading British Made, Dansette Popular, and A. C. Mains. A secondary label identifies Dansette Products Ltd., Dansette-u-Gram House, London, E.C.1. The second unit is a Philips Disc-jockey Major, presented in a two-tone green and cream rexine-covered case. The lid contains the integrated speaker behind a circular metal grille. The internal deck features rotary controls, a Philips shield logo, and a voltage selector. A diamond-shaped metal badge inside the lid is inscribed Philips disc-jockey Major.
Condition report:
Both units exhibit significant signs of age and long-term storage. The Dansette Popular shows moderate exterior wear and dust; internally, the rubber turntable mat is severely perished and has fragmented into several pieces. The Philips Disc-jockey Major shows heavy wear, scuffing, and staining to the exterior rexine. The tonearm of the Philips unit has undergone a crude repair involving a large amount of black electrical tape. Both items are offered as untested and will require professional restoration.
