A set of four nesting tables of graduated sizes, constructed from a dense, reddish-brown hardwood, possibly rosewood or Huali. Each table features a rectangular top with an inset panel and a high-gloss polished lacquer finish. The frieze of each table is decorated with intricately carved and pierced work depicting stylised dragons amongst scrolling foliate patterns. The structures are supported by straight legs terminating in simple block feet, joined by low stretchers for stability. These tables are characteristic of Chinese export furniture produced for the Western market during the mid-20th century. No maker’s marks, stamps, or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The tables are in good structural condition. The high-gloss finish shows some light surface scratches and minor signs of wear consistent with age and domestic use. There is some slight unevenness in the finish visible on the tops.
