Buyer's Premium:

This lot consists of a carved wooden presentation model of a traditional war canoe and an associated turned wooden lidded pot. The model canoe is crafted in a traditional Melanesian style, featuring an animal-head prow and several stylised human figures. The hull displays incised geometric patterns and small white circular details, likely representing shell inlay or paint. The canoe is mounted upon a stand featuring a carved commemorative plaque. This plaque contains central raised text in a Gothic-style script reading R.P. Hutchings, with the base inscribed MASTER AT ARMS in white block capitals. Two circular painted crests flank the central name: the left featuring the Union Jack flag and the right depicting a map of the Diego Garcia atoll with the motto FOOTPRINT OF FREEDOM. This item is a bespoke presentation gift for a British service member who served as a Master at Arms at Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory. The accompanying item is a small hand-turned wooden lidded pot shaped like an apple, featuring a carved stem and a two-part friction-fit lid construction.

Condition report:

Both items are in overall good condition. The wooden model displays a rich, dark patina with light surface dust and minor wear consistent with age and display. The painted elements and inscriptions on the plaque remain clear and well-preserved. The apple-shaped pot shows some natural grain variation and minor handling wear but remains structurally sound.
