This lot comprises two pieces of English salt-glazed stoneware utility wares, typical of production from the early to mid-20th century. The first item is a large cylindrical cider flagon featuring a rounded shoulder, an applied loop handle, and a tap hole at the base for a spigot. The vessel is finished in a traditional two-tone salt glaze, with a deep iron-wash brown upper section and a light buff-coloured lower body. The front bears a black transfer print inscribed PERRY BROS. SOMERSET CIDER DOWLISH WAKE. The flagon is complete with a matching brown-glazed ceramic screw-top stopper with a knurled rim. The second item is an ovoid-bodied harvest pitcher or jug with a wide flared neck and a single strap handle. The shoulder is decorated with two incised concentric rings. It features a two-tone salt glaze with an amber-yellow upper half and a cream-coloured lower half. The base shows concentric throwing marks and bears no visible maker marks.
Condition report:
The cider flagon is in generally good condition with minor surface pitting and light staining consistent with age and use; the tap hole is open and requires a spigot. The harvest pitcher is in fair to good condition, exhibiting several small chips to the upper rim and a significant chip to the foot rim, alongside scattered dark staining and surface marks throughout.
