This lot comprises a pair of traditional Wayang Golek rod puppets from West Java, Indonesia. The three-dimensional figures are hand-carved from wood and painted with polychrome details. One figure represents a female character, possibly a princess or warrior, featuring an elaborate avian-themed headdress, yellow yarn tassel earrings, and a red velvet bodice decorated with gold-toned glass beads and metallic thread. The second figure depicts a male character with a moustache, adorned with a similar bird-motif headdress and a matching beaded bodice. Both puppets are dressed in cotton sarongs featuring traditional batik-printed patterns. The puppets are constructed with central wooden support rods and articulated arms controlled by thinner rods. No other marks or signatures are observed.
Condition report:
The items show signs of wear consistent with age and use. There is visible scuffing, paint loss, and chipping to the carved wooden headdresses and facial features. The central wooden support rod for the female puppet is broken and requires repair. The textiles show some fading and dust accumulation, and there are some loose threads present in the beadwork decoration.
