This is a Chinese brass-bound hardwood jewellery box, featuring a rectangular form with a polished reddish-brown finish. The lid is inset with a circular brass fretwork medallion depicting a stylized Shou character, a traditional symbol for longevity. The exterior is decorated with engraved brass corner plates and mounts, and the front is fitted with an elaborate paitong-style brass latch. The lower portion of the front has a pair of doors that open to reveal a single pull-out drawer. Both the upper compartment and the drawer are lined with a vibrant red silk damask featuring a woven motif of dragons and clouds. No maker’s marks, reign marks, or labels are visible on the object.
Condition report:
The box is in good condition. The exterior hardwood shows minor surface scuffs and light scratches consistent with age and previous handling. The brass hardware has developed a natural patina with areas of light tarnishing. The interior red lining shows some darkening and minor staining, particularly at the base of the main upper compartment. All hinges and the latch mechanism are functional.
