Start price: £5

Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium:

A large fossilised ammonite specimen, a type of extinct marine cephalopod. The item exhibits a classic planispiral coiled form with prominent, well-defined suture patterns. These intricate, fern-like markings, known as ammonitic sutures, represent the intersection of the internal septa with the outer shell wall. The specimen is an internal mould, or steinkern, preserved in a dense sedimentary matrix, potentially limestone. The natural colouration comprises various earthy tones including buff, tan, and light brown. The reverse of the specimen reveals the natural, unworked sedimentary matrix. No locality tags, maker’s marks, or collector labels are present to identify a specific geographic origin or genus.

Condition report:

The specimen is in a natural, weathered condition and is incomplete, with a portion of the final whorl missing. A notable vertical fracture is present, extending from the central umbilicus through the body chamber to the outer edge. There is evidence of natural erosion and fragmentation around the peripheries.
