Buyer's Premium:

This lot comprises two decorative natural history displays originating from Brazil, dating to the mid-20th century. The first item is a vertical rectangular shadowbox containing an assortment of approximately fifteen natural butterfly specimens mounted on a tan paper backing. The collection includes iridescent Morpho species, notably a large blue Morpho and a pale blue Morpho, alongside various smaller specimens from the Pieridae and Heliconiinae families. The butterflies are arranged in a radiating pattern around a central dried floral element. The frame is constructed from polished reddish-brown wood with decorative carved and darkened corner accents. The second item is a horizontal landscape collage constructed from butterfly wings, depicting a stylized view of Rio de Janeiro. The scene features the Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) and palm trees against a painted sunset sky, with iridescent blue wings used for the water and sky highlights. The black glass mat includes four butterfly-shaped cutouts in the corners, inlaid with blue Morpho wings. The inscription in the lower right corner reads Rio de Janeiro – BRASIL. This piece is housed in an ornate gold-toned moulded frame with foliate and scroll motifs.

Condition report:

The specimens in the shadowbox show minor age-related wear, including some visible wing tears and small losses, particularly to the pale blue specimen in the upper left. The wing art collage retains strong colour and iridescence. Both frames exhibit light surface scuffing and minor wear to the gilt and wood finishes consistent with age. Some internal dust is visible behind the glass of the shadowbox.
