This original watercolour on textured wove paper depicts an atmospheric landscape titled Autumn at Burrator. The artist Rex James employs an impressionistic, wet-in-wet technique to render misty tree silhouettes reflecting in the still water of the reservoir. The composition features a muted palette of blues and greys punctuated by autumnal dabs of ochre and rust-coloured foliage. The work is signed C. REX JAMES vertically in the lower right corner. It is housed in a double cream mount within a wood-tone frame featuring a silvered inner slip. The reverse bears a label from the Barbican Gallery, Plymouth, which includes the title and artist name in manuscript alongside a former retail price of £250.
Condition report:
The artwork is in good overall condition. The paper shows minor natural toning consistent with age, but there is no evidence of foxing, staining, or significant light damage to the pigments. The mount is clean and the frame is stable, showing only minor superficial scuffing and shelf wear to the wooden edges.
