Buyer's Premium:

This lot comprises an antique Chinoiserie-style jewellery box and an assortment of vintage costume jewellery. The box, dating from the 19th or early 20th century, is rectangular with a domed lid and finished in black lacquer. The exterior is decorated with gilt-painted scenes featuring figures in landscapes, floral borders, and decorative medallions. Faded gilt characters are present on the top surface. It features a simple metal lock plate, although no key is provided. The collection of jewellery primarily dates from the mid-20th century and includes brooches, pins, tie clips, and novelty badges. Materials include gold-tone and silver-tone base metals, multi-coloured rhinestones, aurora borealis stones, glass pastes, enamel, faux pearls, and molded resin. Notable items include a brass-tone book-shaped souvenir brooch for Chichester Cathedral, a red enamel Royal British Legion poppy pin, a Robertson’s Golly enamel badge, and a Mickey Mouse novelty pin. Figural brooches in the collection include butterflies, a crescent moon set with multi-coloured stones, and a ballerina with a skirt of yellow aurora borealis rhinestones. Also included are various floral sprays set with clear and coloured rhinestones, a shell-style cameo brooch in a gold-tone frame, and textured gold-tone leaf and floral pins. Most jewellery pieces appear to be unsigned.

Condition report:

The lacquered box shows significant wear throughout, with heavy chipping and loss to the lacquer at the corners, edges, and base. The gilt decoration is faded in areas. The costume jewellery is in generally fair to good vintage condition, with visible surface oxidation and tarnish on the base metals. Some pieces exhibit missing rhinestones or faux pearls consistent with age and use. One brooch is presented on a worn card.
