A portable wooden engineer’s or machinist’s tool chest produced by the Union Tool Chest Works. The chest features a fall-front panel that slides into the base to reveal a tiered arrangement of seven drawers of varying dimensions, alongside a top storage compartment under the lid. The chest is constructed from stained hardwood with metal hardware, including corner brackets, a central lock cylinder, and a flexible top carry handle. The interior drawers are lined with green felt. The fall-front panel and several drawer fronts bear the maker’s central oval logo containing the word UNION.
The chest contains a collection of precision measuring and hand tools, including:
A Mitutoyo Absolute Digimatic digital caliper and a manual vernier caliper.
A Moore & Wright precision instrument housed in a branded textured black case.
Several steel hand clamps, including examples marked Eclipse No. 411 and Made in England.
A set of spring dividers and an engineer’s square.
An assortment of metal files.
A selection of copper components, identified as spot welding electrodes or tips, contained within a plastic bag.
A blue storage box bearing calibration labels with handwritten dates from August 2013.
Condition report:
The chest shows significant signs of age and heavy workshop use. The exterior woodwork displays extensive scratching, scuffing, and loss of finish across all surfaces. The metal hardware, including the handle brackets and corner pieces, shows surface corrosion and tarnishing. The interior green felt lining is intact but exhibits wear, dust, and staining consistent with long-term tool storage. The included tools are in well-used condition; several steel items show a surface patina and spots of oxidisation. Digital instruments have not been tested for power or functional accuracy. No key is present for the lock.
