This high-relief wood carving, likely fashioned from teak or a similar tropical hardwood, depicts a dynamic scene of an elephant herd within a dense jungle setting. The composition includes multiple elephants in various poses amidst stylised foliage, including fan palms and bamboo, with carved logs in the foreground, all contained within an integral stepped wooden frame. The style is characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century Southeast Asian decorative art, possibly of Thai or Balinese origin. The reverse of the panel shows the natural grain and a prominent knot, with two brass hanging brackets and a tied suspension cord attached. No signatures, maker’s marks, or edition numbers are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The panel is in fair condition. There is a significant horizontal split or open join visible across the right-hand side of the relief. Minor surface scuffs and wear are present on the outer edges of the frame.
