A Victorian mahogany wheel or banjo barometer manufactured by Le Lacheur and Co of Guernsey. The mahogany case features an onion-top design with carved scrollwork to the pediment and base, finished with a bone or ivory setting knob located below the dial. The 8-inch silvered metal dial is set behind a convex glass bezel within a brass rim. The dial centre is decorated with an engraved foliate motif and is calibrated from 28 to 31 inches of mercury. Weather indications include Stormy, MUCH RAIN, RAIN, Change, FAIR, SET FAIR, and Very Dry. It is equipped with a steel indicator hand and a brass setting hand. An integral silvered scale thermometer is housed in the neck of the case behind glass, calibrated from 20 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit with various heat indications including FEVER HEAT, BLOOD HEAT, SUMR HEAT, TEMPE RATE, and FREEZ ING. The dial is marked LE LACHEUR and Co within the centre and GUERNSEY in an oval cartouche below.
Condition report:
The mahogany case shows minor surface scuffs, nicks, and wear consistent with age and use. There is tarnish and oxidation to the silvering on both the main dial and the thermometer scale. An auction lot sticker is present on the glass. The mercury column in the thermometer appears intact. The working status of the internal barometer mechanism has not been tested and is unverified.
