Two of hand-carved hardwood elephant head wall plaques, consistent with Southeast Asian export craftsmanship. The carvings are rendered in high relief from solid hardwood. The first plaque is finished with a dark, high-gloss reddish-brown stain and features rhythmic horizontal carved bands along the trunk and deep texturing to the ears. It retains one light-toned wooden tusk. The second plaque displays a matte medium-brown finish with a visible grain pattern and naturalistic carving around the orbital area and trunk. This plaque is missing both tusks. Both items are fitted with integrated metal sawtooth-style hanging brackets to the reverse. The matte-finished plaque bears two white paper adhesive tags reading D9638 and £702 c.
Condition report:
The high-gloss plaque is missing one tusk and exhibits minor surface dust and scuffs. The matte plaque is missing both tusks and has adhesive residue from contemporary labels. Both plaques show oxidation and surface rust on the metal hanging hardware.
