Buyer's Premium:

A collection of liturgical materials pertaining to the Carthusian Order (Ordo Cartusiensis). The primary items are two large folio volumes of the Missale Sacri Ordinis Cartusiensis, edited by Anselmi Marie and published at the Carthusian press of S. Mariae de Pratis (Neuville-sous-Montreuil) in 1883. The volumes are bound in full brown leather with five raised bands to the spines and red morocco labels gilt-stamped with the title. The interior text is printed in red and black (rubricated) on heavy paper, featuring ornate woodcut-style initials and decorative borders. A printed supplement titled Supplementum ad Missale Cartusiense, dated 1972 and published In Domo Cartusiae, is included. Also present is a smaller, thick octavo liturgical volume, likely a Breviary or Diurnal, bound in dark leather with a printed icon of Christ Pantocrator affixed to the upper board. This volume contains multiple coloured silk ribbon markers and several index tabs for sections including PRECES, MEM, and BX M V. Completing the collection is a trio of altar cards (canon cards) used for the celebration of the Mass, featuring ornate polychrome decorative borders and rubricated Latin text including the Gloria, Credo, and the beginning of the Gospel of John.

Condition report:

The two folio missals show significant wear to the leather bindings, including heavy surface scuffing, cracking to the spines, and significant loss of leather at the corners and spine ends exposing the underlying boards. The internal text blocks are structurally sound with moderate age-toning and light thumbing consistent with ecclesiastical use. The smaller octavo volume shows scuffing to the binding edges and significant fraying to the silk ribbons. The altar cards show light age-toning and minor wear to the mounting.
