This collection comprises two sets of graduated hand-carved wooden figurines and two standalone elephant carvings. The first set of five graduated figurines depicts stylised whales or fish with minimalist features and incised eyes, carved from a reddish-brown wood with a visible grain. The second set of five graduated carvings features stylised elephant heads with coiled trunks, detailed with decorative bands of dark and reddish stain and notched detailing. These designs are highly characteristic of Philippine handicraft from the mid-to-late 20th century. The collection is completed by a large elephant carving integrated with a heavy rectangular dark wood block and a smaller elephant figurine carved from a light-toned dense hardwood on an integral textured base.
Largest whale length: 20cm – 25cm.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition. There is light surface wear and minor scuffing to the edges of the larger wooden pieces. Dust accumulation is present in the recessed areas of the carvings. Natural grain checking is visible on some of the larger carvings, which is typical for the material and age. The tusks on the smaller light-toned elephant figurine remain intact.
