Fortnightly Auctions Of Antiques, Collectables, General Furniture and Effects. New Lots Added Daily.
This collection of carved hardwood decorative items features elephant motifs throughout. The grouping includes rectangular relief panels and elephant head masks. One relief panel is finished in a dark stain and depicts a procession of elephants with inset tusks. Another larger relief panel is deeply carved in reddish-brown teak, featuring an elephant and calf amidst dense foliate and floral scrollwork. The elephant head carvings are worked from solid tropical hardwoods with finishes ranging from light natural wood to dark stains. These items are characteristic of mid-20th century export or folk art from India or Southeast Asia. Numerous adhesive auction house labels from Shobrook and Co, Plymouth are attached to the items.
Condition report:
Overall condition is fair. Surface dust and grime are present across all pieces. There are minor surface abrasions, small chips, and scratches consistent with handling and age. Several elephant head masks are missing their tusks, and one head has a rudimentary replacement tusk. Significant adhesive residue from auction labels is present on most surfaces.
