This lot contains a varied collection of religious ephemera and devotional items from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The primary paper item is a framed Victorian achievement certificate from St. Andrew’s School, Litchurch, Derby. The certificate is headed with the motto WELL BEGUN HALF DONE and features a central crest with a St. Andrew’s cross. The handwritten text certifies that a ten-year-old student was examined by Her Majesty’s Inspector and passed Standard IV on 3 August 1884. It is signed by Wm Lazenby as Head Master and Robert Ney as Manager. The bottom margin identifies the printer as Bemrose and Sons, London and Derby.
The collection includes several religious publications: a small green cloth-bound pocket edition of The Gospel According to St Luke bearing the BSS monogram for the British and Foreign Bible Society, a larger red cloth-bound Holy Bible, and a cream-coloured wallet-style booklet secured with an elastic band.
Devotional objects consist of three crucifixes: a large wooden wall crucifix with a cast metal figure of Christ, an ornate cream-coloured molded crucifix with scrollwork detailing, and a small simple wooden handheld crucifix. Also present is a blue plastic beaded rosary with silver-toned metal components, and two small devotional medals in gold and silver-toned finishes.
Printed ephemera includes a black and white A PEACEFUL EASTER card depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd, a colour card showing St. Bernadette at the Lourdes grotto, and a small mounted print of the crucifixion marked Printed in Great Britain. A small cardboard box contains an assortment of vintage postcards.
Certificate frame: 45 cm x 35 cm
Gospel of St Luke: 11 cm x 7 cm.
Condition report:
The items show age-related wear throughout. The 1884 certificate has notable foxing and significant overall toning to the paper. The cloth-bound books show scuffing to the corners, minor staining, and fading to the spines. The metal figure on the large wooden crucifix exhibits some oxidation. The molded cream crucifix and rosary appear in good order with minor surface wear. General surface dust and light scratches are present across the wooden items and frames.
