Fortnightly Auctions Of Antiques, Collectables, General Furniture and Effects. New Lots Added Daily.
This assortment consists of hand-carved decorative items and sculptures crafted from dense, dark ebony wood. The collection includes two large individual elephant figures, a pair of L-shaped bookends each featuring a mounted elephant carving, a group sculpture depicting three elephants on a single carved base, and a smaller stand-alone elephant carving. Additionally, there is a circular lidded vessel featuring a carved elephant finial on the lid. The vessel is decorated with radial inlay work using porcupine quills or bone splints set into the wood, a technique characteristic of traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship. The elephant carvings feature contrasting light-coloured inlays, likely bone, for the eyes, tusks, and toenails. The wood displays natural grain variations, with some pieces showing rich dark brown and black tones. Several items bear small white inventory labels with the handwritten code C516C.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition, showing signs of age and display. There is a visible layer of surface dust across most items. The hardwood exhibits some minor surface scuffs and small natural drying cracks, known as checks, which are common in dense ebony. The bone inlays for the tusks and toenails appear to be mostly intact throughout the assortment. Adhesive labels are present on the surface of some pieces.
