Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of Victorian-era wood engravings, likely extracted from a contemporary periodical such as The Illustrated London News or The Graphic. The first print is titled The New Thames Yacht Club Schooner-Match and depicts several yachts in a competitive race, with the vessels Gwendolin, Flying Cloud, Egeria, Livonia, and Guinevere identified in the text at the top of the image. The second print is titled H.M.S. Captain, Lately Lost at Sea and illustrates the Royal Navy ironclad turret ship in heavy seas, commemorating its tragic loss in September 1870. The works are executed in the wood engraving technique, characterised by fine, dense line work used for mass-produced Victorian illustrations. Both prints are presented in matching modern dark-stained wood frames with silver-coloured inner slips and double mounts in peach and cream tones. No artist signatures, plate marks, or edition numbers are visible.
Image area: approximately 25cm x 35cm.

Condition report:

The paper exhibits general age-related toning and light yellowing consistent with 19th-century wood-pulp paper. There is minor buckling and undulation visible to both sheets within the mounts. The frames are in overall good condition with some very light surface scuffs and dust from storage. The glazing is intact, and no major foxing, tears, or staining are immediately apparent through the glass. The backings are modern replacements.
