Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium:

A late 19th-century French mantel clock of architectural form. The case is constructed from black slate with inset panels of reddish-brown variegated marble. The front and base are decorated with incised scrolling foliate motifs, which show traces of original gilding. The dial consists of a cream enamel chapter ring with black Arabic numerals and a minute track, set within a gilt metal inner bezel. The centre is recessed to reveal the brass movement plate. It features a mechanical eight-day spring-driven movement with two winding arbors on the dial face for time and strike. The reverse is fitted with a circular metal backplate featuring a pierced sunburst decorative pattern.

Condition report:

The clock shows signs of general surface wear, including accumulated dust and surface dirt. There is a visible horizontal crack running through the red marble inlay at the top centre of the pediment. The gilding within the incised decorations is largely worn or missing. Several small chips and minor losses are present along the sharp edges and corners of the slate case. The enamel dial exhibits light surface staining. The two blued steel hands are of mismatched styles. The movement is untested and is missing the winding key and pendulum.
