This collection comprises British military service awards and related commemorative items from the early to mid-20th century. A central piece is a bronze World War I Memorial Plaque, cast with the name Sidney John Cannell. The plaque features the figure of Britannia with a lion and two dolphins, surrounded by the inscription He Died For Freedom and Honour.
The medal group includes a mounted naval set consisting of a 1914-15 Star, a British War Medal 1914-1918, a Victory Medal, and a Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The British War Medal and Long Service medal feature the profile of King George V. Additionally, the collection contains loose examples of World War I medals including 1914-15 Stars, British War Medals, and Victory Medals, with the latter bearing the reverse text The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919.
World War II service is represented by multiple 1939-45 Stars, a Defence Medal, and a War Medal 1939-45, the latter two featuring the profile of King George VI. The collection also includes two Imperial Service Medals in their original presentation cases, one from the reign of King George VI in a red box and one from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in a black box.
Associated naval ephemera includes a black silk cap tally with gold wire lettering for HMS Collingwood and original postal envelopes, one marked Registered On His Majesty’s Service and another addressed to Saltley. Various individual and multiple ribbon bars are present throughout the lot.
Condition report:
The collection shows a range of conditions consistent with age and storage. Silver-content medals exhibit moderate to heavy surface tarnish and toning. Bronze medals and the memorial plaque display an aged patina. The ribbon on the mounted 1914-15 Star is heavily shredded and frayed. Loose ribbons show varying degrees of wear and fading. The Imperial Service Medals and their cases are in well-preserved condition. Paper and card components show expected yellowing and edge wear.
