Start price: £20

Estimated price: £20 - £40

Buyer's Premium:

An Ercol Goldsmith model rocking chair, manufactured in England. The design features a high spindle back with a steam-bent beechwood hoop and a contoured seat carved from solid elm. The chair is fitted with swept armrests supported by splayed spindles and is mounted upon twin beechwood rockers. Construction details include traditional wedge-jointed spindles through the seat. The piece retains its original maker’s identification, including a blue and gold metallic label to the rear edge of the seat marked MADE IN ERCOL ENGLAND. The underside of the seat is further incised with a rectangular stamp containing the British Standards Institution Kite mark, B.S. 1960, and 2056, with the letters A H stamped above the boxed mark.

Condition report:

The chair exhibits a significant horizontal stress crack to the timber on the outer face of the top bentwood back rail. There is widespread wear and thinning to the original lacquer finish, most prominent on the armrests, the crest of the back rail, and along the rockers. The elm seat shows various small surface scratches, minor dings, and visible water-ring marks. The underside of the rockers features multiple small circular holes indicating where floor protectors were previously attached.
